What Types of Rooms Are Covered Under Health Insurance?

Vote: 100

Many people tend to ignore room rent coverage when they choose a health insurance policy, as they get caught up in the amount of insurance coverage, premiums, and hospital network. The nature of the hospital room covered by your policy, however, can have a direct impact on the total claim and out-of-pocket costs incurred during hospitalisation. The various types of hospital rooms are most often covered by a health insurance plan, depending on the room rent limit and terms set forth in the insurance policy. Read on to learn more.

Types of Rooms Covered Under Health Insurance

Health insurance policies may cover different types of hospital rooms depending on the plan and the room rent eligibility mentioned in the policy. The common rooms can be assigned to any of the following categories:

  • Shared rooms

  • Semi-private rooms

  • Private single rooms

  • Rooms or suites (in the more upscale plans)

How is Room Rent Limit Specified in the Health Insurance Policy?

The limit on the rent of the room may be quoted as a fixed sum or as a certain percentage of the sum insured. That is, the limit on room charges in a medical insurance policy is the highest room charge that is insured for any given day a policyholder is admitted to a hospital. This sub-limit is the max that insurers will pay; the remainder must be covered by the policyholder.

Effect of Exceeding the Sub-limit

Failure to stick with the room rent sub-limit may have a negative impact on the overall claim settlement of health insurance firms in India. When the room rent limit is exceeded, then the insurer may proportionately reduce the amount to be reimbursed for any treatment expense incurred. This is referred to as a "Proportionate Deductible".

For example, if you book a room of ₹4,000 per day as opposed to ₹3000 per room, which is the limit set for the room, the reimbursement for any medical expenses incurred may also be reduced by 33%.

If this is the case, the insurance company only pays out a portion of the claim, and you will have to cover the rest of the costs. This may create an unanticipated cost for you and cause a lack of satisfaction when claims are settled.

Room Rent Across Different Hospital Types

The rental terms in the rooms can vary based on the type and care setting of the hospital, and the policy wording typically outlines how the coverage works.

  • Some government hospitals may have standard room types, fixed charges, and coverage may be tied to the limits of their policies.

  • Generally, private hospitals provide more types of rooms, and coverage will be determined based on the approved room type and policy conditions.

  • Tertiary care and teaching hospitals can have many types of rooms, each with a unique billing structure.

Across all healthcare settings, the process for claim settlement may differ. Some insurance companies may have a more seamless claim process in certain hospitals without the need for paperwork or pre-authorization. It is important to read the policy wordings carefully as to the eligibility, exclusion, and conditions pertaining to room rent before hospitalisation.
