What Proof Is Required for an 80D Preventive Health Check-Up?

Vote: 1

If you are claiming a tax deduction for a preventive health check-up under Section 80D, here is the good news: a preventive health check-up is eligible for an 80D deduction in order to encourage taxpayers to be more health-aware. Up to ₹5,000 can be claimed as a deduction, and the payment for preventive health check-ups can be made in cash.

What the Income Tax Department actually requires

You will need documents or proofs for claiming tax-saving deductions u/s 80D, such as health insurance receipts. However, if you want to claim a deduction u/s 80D, then you must enter details like the name of the insurer, policy number, and health insurance amount.

The key point to understand: deductions under Section 80D of the Income Tax Act are available only under the old tax regime. Taxpayers who opt for the new tax regime cannot claim deductions for health insurance premiums or preventive health check-ups under this section.

Documents you should keep ready

While the income tax portal does not require you to upload proof at the time of filing, you should maintain these records:

  • Payment receipt or invoice from the hospital, diagnostic centre, or clinic showing the date, amount paid, and tests conducted

  • Bank statement or payment proof showing the transaction (UPI, card, or net banking)

  • Health check-up report from the medical facility

Preventive health checkups of up to ₹5,000 are included within these limits. This means the ₹5,000 is not a separate benefit; it comes out of your overall 80D ceiling of ₹25,000 or ₹50,000.

Why you still need to save these documents

Your employer may ask for these records when preparing Form 16. If you file independently, keeping receipts makes the process smoother. More importantly, if the tax department ever raises a query or conducts an assessment, you will need to show valid proof of expenses claimed.

Scenario

Maximum 80D limit

Preventive check-up limit

Below 60 years

₹25,000

₹5,000 (within limit)

Senior citizen (60+)

₹50,000

₹5,000 (within limit)

To sum up, you do not need to upload proof when filing your return online, but you must keep original receipts and payment records safely. If your employer or the tax department asks for documentation, a valid payment receipt from a recognised medical facility is sufficient evidence. Cash payments are allowed for preventive check-ups, unlike health insurance premiums.
