What is the Role of Subsidies in Health Insurance?

Vote: 1

A subsidy in health insurance just means the government pays part of your premium, so you don't have to pay the full amount. Sometimes they pay for everything. The reason behind it is straightforward. Hospital costs in India have gone up a lot, and most families can't really afford a full premium on top of school fees, rent, EMIs, and everything else. So instead of leaving people without any coverage, the government takes care of a portion of the cost.

It's like a sale at a store-the same product, but cheaper because someone else covers part of the price. A subsidy does that for your health policy.

Now the actual details.

Why are subsidies given in the first place?

Most people in our country still end up paying hospital bills from whatever they have saved. And one bad admission, one ICU stay, can finish off years of saving in a week. Anyone who has been around a hospital billing counter knows this feeling.

That's the gap subsidies are trying to fill. Through schemes that fall under IRDAI rules, plus a bunch of central and state programmes, the premium is either dropped down or fully paid for. Daily wage workers, farmers, and older parents living on a pension can all have a policy without paying the full amount. The same person who used to say "abhi rehne do, baad mein dekhenge" is actually able to get it done now.

Calling it charity feels wrong.

How do they make health cover affordable?

Your cost gets reduced-it becomes either zero or just a small portion of it, with the plan footing the remainder of the bill. You are unaware that this affects your perception of insurance; it is no longer an added cost, thus not discontinued at the end of the first year. The insurance remains active and, of course, can be used only if it is active.

Who gets the most out of it?

Subsidies are mainly meant for the people who need them the most. Low-income families, informal workers, farmers, senior citizens, and households running on one salary with many dependents at home.

Young adults who have just started earning also gain a lot. Between rent, loans, and helping out at home, paying a full premium feels heavy. A little support can push them to buy their first policy rather than put it off until "next year." We all know how that "next year" usually never comes.

Ayushman Bharat – PMJAY is one example where this kind of support has reached crores of families across the country.

How they help during a medical emergency

When someone in the family ends up in a hospital, the worry is not just about treatment. It is also about how to arrange the money. A subsidised policy means you don't have to break your FDs, take a loan from a relative, or sell jewellery just to clear the bill.

That peace of mind, when things are going wrong, is really what subsidies are about. They keep families covered. They keep treatment within reach. And they make sure a sudden hospital visit doesn't push a family backwards by ten years.
