How Does Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY Work?

Eligible beneficiaries of PM-JAY are identified through government databases and can receive treatment in empanelled public or private hospitals in India. Hospitals verify patients and provide cashless treatment, so they do not need to make any upfront payments for covered services.

The scheme reimburses hospitalisation costs, such as procedures, drugs, and diagnostics, and the government pays the hospital directly.

Who is Eligible to Apply for Ayushman Bharat PMJAY?

Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana eligibility criteria include socio-economic criteria for both rural and urban households, ensuring that the most vulnerable populations receive support.

Rural Beneficiaries

The scheme includes rural households that meet specific deprivation criteria. Eligible families include those with:

  • A disabled member without any able-bodied adult support

  • Households without land that rely mainly on casual manual labour for income

  • Belonging to SC or ST communities

Moreover, some groups automatically qualify based on criteria like primitive tribal communities, destitute individuals, families living on alms, households of manual scavengers, and legally freed bonded labourers.

In urban areas, eligibility is determined by occupation. The scheme applies to people who do informal or low-paying jobs, such as:

  • Sweepers, sanitation workers and security guards
