Pre-planned hospitalisation simply means any medical treatment or surgery that you know about ahead of time, like a scheduled operation or a planned procedure. Most health insurance policies in India make it easy to claim benefits for these situations. If you know the steps beforehand, you can avoid last-minute stress and focus on your health.
The first thing you need to do is let your health insurance company or their representative know about your upcoming hospital stay. Try to do this a few days before you get admitted. You’ll be asked to fill out a pre-authorisation form, which you can usually find online or get from customer support. This form will ask for details like your diagnosis, the treatment you’ll be getting, the hospital’s name, and when you plan to get admitted.
After that, your doctor or the hospital will fill out the medical part of the form and attach some important documents. These usually include your doctor’s prescription, test reports, and an estimate of how much the treatment will cost. Once everything is sent in, your insurer will check if your policy covers the treatment, if there are any waiting periods, and if you have enough coverage left.
If the request is approved, you will receive a pre-authorisation approval letter. This allows you to avail cashless treatment at a network hospital, meaning the insurer directly settles eligible expenses with the hospital. You may still need to pay for non-covered items such as registration charges, consumables, or room upgrades, if any.
If your hospital isn’t in the insurer’s network, don’t worry. You can still go ahead with your treatment and then claim a reimbursement later. After you’re discharged, just make sure to submit all the original bills, discharge summary, prescriptions, and payment receipts within the time limit set by your insurer.
