Is Autoimmune Encephalitis Treatment Covered by Insurance?

Vote: 1

Although a rare condition, Autoimmune encephalitis is covered as any other critical illness in health plans. The insurers cover any medically necessary treatment of encephalitis, including cases of autoimmune treatment in a hospital. That is, as long as you are in the hospital because of AE and are provided with the planned treatments, the expenses should be admissible.

[Autoimmune encephalitis (AE) is a severe inflammation of the brain where the immune system targets healthy neural tissue. Therapy more frequently consists of expensive immunotherapies.]

Autoimmune Encephalitis Treatments and Their Insurance Coverage

Immunotherapy is the standard treatment of Autoimmune encephalitis. Unusual treatments involve intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG), high-dose steroids, and plasmapheresis. All of these are provided in a hospital.

Coverage of modern treatments is a mandatory requirement of IRDAI. So, immunotherapy using injectable monoclonal antibodies is treated as covered care. Inpatient services of hospitals, medical examinations, treatments and rehabilitation services are also covered by health insurance, in case of encephalitis.

Therefore, the cost of IVIG infusions or plasmapheresis sessions is paid as an inpatient claim. Post-hospitalisation benefits even cover follow-up care such as physiotherapy or speech therapy.

Below is a summary:

Treatment/Service

Coverage by Insurance

Notes/Pre-Authorisation

Hospitalisation (ICU/ward)

Covered

It includes all inpatient care that is required.

IVIG infusion (immunotherapy)

Covered

IRDAI needs immunotherapy coverage; take pre-auth on scheduled infusions.

Plasmapheresis (plasma exchange)

Covered

Considered standard care; pre-approve schedule with insurer.

High-dose steroids (medication)

Covered

Usual hospitalisation drugs.

Rehabilitation (PT/OT/speech)

Covered

Provided within the post-hospitalisation service.

Pre-authorisation (any planned care)

Required

Must be obtained before planned admission/procedure.

Autoimmune Encephalitis Coverage Updates and Limitations

There is no specific exclusion for autoimmune encephalitis. Inpatient coverage is applicable with a valid health policy (individual/family floater). Waiting periods may exist due to pre-existing conditions. For new diagnoses, it is usually covered after the initial waiting period (approximately 30–90 days).

In addition, insurers tend to consider neurological disorders as severe illnesses, so full benefits, including ICU expenses, are generally covered.

So, you must ensure that you get all advanced treatments (IVIG, monoclonal antibodies, etc.) pre-approved. The “Modern Treatment Methods” list issued by the IRDAI even mandates that immunotherapies should not be excluded.

Medical costs, such as IVIG, plasmapheresis, and ICU care, are included as part of hospital treatment. All you have to do is go through the standard procedure:

  • Be admitted at a network hospital where possible

  • Pre-authorise planned treatments

  • Make bills using inpatient claims

This complicated treatment becomes affordable with insurance. Always check coverage limits and subs-limits of your policy, but reassure yourself that the treatment of encephalitis, in principle, falls within your health cover.
