How Many Times Can You Port Health Insurance?

Vote: 1

Portability is a powerful benefit in health insurance, but people often question whether there is any limit after which they cannot change insurers. Industry sources suggest that porting frequency does not have a precise limit.

You can port your policy every time you want. Insurers explain that every time you renew, you have a chance to switch your policy, while preserving waiting period credits and bonuses. Keep reading to know more.

IRDAI Guidelines

Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI) allows portability at each policy renewal (made at least 45 days before expiry). The rules do not mention any limit on repetitions. Thus, theoretically, you can switch insurers year after year.

Each port simply requires submitting the portability form and proposal at renewal, after which the new insurer takes on your existing benefits. The key IRDAI requirement is continuous coverage, not a limit on the number of switches.

Industry Practice

Top insurers affirm unlimited porting. For instance, ManipalCigna explicitly states: “There is no restriction on the number of times you can port”. Practically, this implies that during each renewal period, customers are free to change insurers, provided they can identify a plan that better fits their requirements in terms of coverage, cost, or service.

However, portability is not automatic or unconditional. Any request must undergo underwriting and eligibility requirements of the new insurer, such as medical history, age, claims history, and the accuracy of disclosure. When these requirements are fulfilled, with medical exams when requested, then the insurer will typically provide coverage with continuity benefits.

Portability must be regarded as a continuing right, rather than a one-time choice. It enables policyholders to adjust coverage to suit changing needs and market opportunities. Nonetheless, it is important to plan at the time of renewal, compare terms, and ensure compliance with the insurer's requirements to secure smooth approval.

Considerations for Multiple Porting

While you can port multiple times, practicality matters: each port entails underwriting, and premiums or terms may vary based on your age and health at that time. Frequent switching should have a clear benefit, such as getting better coverage or service, to justify the effort.

Luckily, your credits are transferred to every port: all of your waiting periods and any no-claim bonus come over to the new policy. So you do not lose them when changing. You have the option to port health insurance as frequently as you wish (at every renewal).

The only limit is time: renewal is annual, so you can do it yearly. Make sure each switch is carefully considered, but rest assured that IRDAI rules and insurers permit multiple portings without capping the number.
