Does Cashless Insurance Cover All Types of Treatments?
Vote: 1
Cashless health insurance is a popular feature that lets you get hospital treatment without paying upfront. But does it cover every treatment you might need? The short answer is no. While cashless insurance offers convenient, direct billing to the hospital, it comes with several conditions and exclusions you should understand before you rely on it.
How cashless insurance actually works
With cashless insurance, the insurer pays the hospital directly for the costs of your treatment, but only up to the amount they have pre-approved and only when the treatment falls within your policy's terms and conditions. This facility is available only at network hospitals that have an agreement with your insurer.
That means if you go to a hospital outside your insurer's network, you typically cannot use the cashless option. However, the General Insurance Council launched the "Cashless Everywhere" initiative in 2024, allowing policyholders to access cashless treatment even at non-network hospitals, subject to prior intimation and policy terms.
Treatments that are commonly excluded
Even at a network hospital, cashless claims will not cover everything. Common exclusions include:
- Pre-existing conditions during waiting periods: Pre-existing diseases are conditions diagnosed or treated within 48 months before the policy started. Most policies have a waiting period (typically three years) before these become eligible.
- Cosmetic and aesthetic procedures: Surgeries performed purely for appearance, unless medically necessary after an accident, are generally not covered.
- Non-medical expenses: Items like toiletries, special meals, and registration fees are excluded.
- Self-inflicted injuries: Any harm you cause to yourself is not covered.
- OPD treatment: Outpatient consultations are excluded unless your specific policy includes them.
Other reasons cashless claims get rejected
Beyond exclusions, your cashless claim can be denied if:
- Your sum insured is already exhausted
- You did not disclose a pre-existing condition when buying the policy
- You did not inform your insurer in time about the hospitalisation
- The treatment falls under a waiting period that has not yet passed
Whether AYUSH treatments (Ayurveda, Yoga, Naturopathy, Unani, Siddha, Homeopathy) are covered depends on your policy's features. If included, they are subject to the policy's terms.
Cashless insurance is a valuable feature, but it does not cover all treatments. Always read your policy document carefully, check the list of exclusions, and confirm the network hospital list before you need care. Knowing these limits in advance can save you from unexpected bills during a medical emergency.
