Can Psychiatric Counselling Be Covered Under Critical Health Insurance?

Vote: 100

Mental health is still uncomfortable territory for most Indian families, let alone their insurance companies. So when someone asks whether psychiatric counselling can be covered under critical health insurance, the honest answer is - partly, and it depends on what kind of plan you have.

For years, insurers in India wanted nothing to do with mental health claims. They would either reject them outright or bury exclusions deep in the policy wording. That only started changing after the Mental Healthcare Act of 2017 forced their hand. The law now says insurers have to treat mental illness the same way they treat any physical condition.

Is Psychiatric Treatment Legally Covered Under Health Insurance in India?

Legally, yes. The Mental Healthcare Act made it non-negotiable. If your health insurance pays for a hospital stay because of a cardiac problem, it has to pay for a hospital stay because of severe depression or a psychotic episode, too. The IRDAI reinforced this by telling insurers they cannot exclude mental health anymore.

But here is the part nobody talks about. The law mainly protects you when you are hospitalised. If someone in your family needs admission for a mental health crisis, the insurer has to cover it. That is settled. What is not settled is outpatient care — the weekly therapy sessions, the psychiatrist follow-ups, the counselling that people with mental health conditions actually rely on. Most standard plans still do not cover that, and the law does not push hard enough on this front yet.

Why Most Critical Illness Plans Do Not Include Psychiatric Counselling

This is where people usually get confused. They hear " health insurance" and think it covers any serious illness. Critical illness plans work in a different way. They cover a list of conditions, such as cancer, organ failure, and major strokes. If you are diagnosed with one of these conditions, you get a lump sum payment.

Mental health conditions, even if they are very debilitating, are rarely on this list. A critical illness policy will not pay for counselling sessions or therapy. If you need coverage for these things, you should look at a health plan with an outpatient department (OPD) or wellness rider. Some insurers have started including health consultations in these add-ons. This is still a development, but it's a positive step.

How to Verify Psychiatric Counselling Coverage in Your Policy

Do not take what the insurance company says at face value. You need to look at your insurance policy document and go to the part that talks about what's not covered. Look for things like illness or psychiatric treatment, or counselling. If your insurance plan only talks about when you have to stay in the hospital, that means your therapy sessions are not included in the plan.

If your insurance plan has something called an OPD rider, you should check if mental health is covered by this rider. If the words used in the policy document are not clear, you should ask the insurance company directly what they mean. You do not want the insurance company to reject your claim when you are already dealing with a time. It is better to clear up any confusion when it is just about filling out forms.
