Can a Lapsed Health Insurance Policy Be Revived
Vote: 1
Failure to pay the premium by the renewal date may cancel your coverage; however, a lapsed health policy does not mean it has been terminated permanently. Most insurers permit you to revive (reinstate) a lapsed policy within a short time.
In practice, IRDAI standards require health cover to be maintained (renewed) except in extreme circumstances, and insurers therefore tend to allow reinstatement.
Grace Period and Lapse
Most health policies have a grace period (usually 15–30 days) after the due date for renewal. If you pay within this window, the policy automatically continues (or “reinstates” automatically) without a claim break.
The policy lapses and becomes inapplicable after the grace period. At that point, you must actively request reinstatement.
Revival (Reinstatement) Process
To reestablish a lapsed policy, an application must usually be submitted within a revival period. This depends on the insurer, but it is usually a 6- to 12-month lapse.
To illustrate, most insurers' revival period is 6 months after the policy lapses. The reinstatement must be requested within 3 to 12 months after the lapse.
Within this window, you’ll need to pay all overdue premiums (plus any late fees) and possibly undergo a fresh medical check-up. If the lapse is quite new, the insurers can easily reinstate, and in case it is after a long period, then the underwriting will be more stringent, or even refuse to reinstate.
Factor | Details |
Timeframe | Usually within 6–12 months of lapse (varies by insurer). |
Premium Payment | Must clear all missed premiums, often plus a nominal fee. |
Medical Check | Likely required if the lapse was long, to update health status. |
Sum Insured | Restored to the original amount if reinstated. |
Conditions | You may lose accumulated NCB and waiting-period credits. |
For example, your policy coverage will remain the same as before the policy lapsed. Reinstating a policy will typically erase your no-claim bonus and reset waiting periods. Essentially, the insurance cover is restored, but you often have to start certain benefits from scratch.
When Revival May Fail
Once the insurer revival period elapses, you cannot reinstate the old policy. Then you need to purchase another policy to stay insured. The insurers may refuse a reinstatement even within a reinstatement window when the applicant’s health has greatly declined or when the lapse was the result of deliberate negligence.
But according to IRDAI, a clean-record holder has a general right to renewal.
A lapsed health policy can be revived – but only if you act in time. Contact your insurer as soon as a lapse occurs: pay any outstanding dues, provide any necessary health certificates, and they will likely reinstate coverage.
Once reinstated, your original coverage is maintained. You need to keep in mind that you can lose all bonus benefits and must go through the waiting periods once more. The most effective way is to renew promptly, but when you lapse, do not give up; call your insurer immediately and re-establish your health cover.
