Are Abdominal Cancers Covered Under Insurance?

Vote: 1

Abdominal cancers include cancers of the stomach, colon, liver, pancreas, ovaries, and more organs in the abdomen. Health insurance in India covers this cancer treatment, including surgery, chemotherapy, and radiation. That said, the exact coverage still depends on your policy terms and your medical history at the time of purchase.

Abdominal Cancer Coverage Under Standard Plans

Malignant neoplasms (cancers) are generally covered when treatment involves hospitalization. But, there’s a catch. If the cancer was a pre-existing disease, meaning your coverage plan started after diagnosis, the insurer may choose not to cover it.

This makes the timing of diagnosis important.

So, if you are diagnosed with abdominal cancer after buying the policy, it will most likely be covered. Common cancers such as stomach and colon cancer are typically included. Ovarian cancer, though classified as a reproductive cancer, is also covered as it develops within the abdominal cavity.

These conditions are treated like any other illness under the policy. Chemotherapy and radiation therapy are covered if they are medically required and part of hospital treatment.

Here’s a quick overview of how common abdominal cancers are typically covered:

HIV/AIDS-related cancer or STD

Abdominal Cancer Policy Exclusions and Waiting Periods

As per IRDAI, insurers cannot deny coverages for cancers developed after the policy is issued, given all applicable waiting periods are completed. But insurers can simply refuse to cover any cancer that was known during the time of purchase.

Therefore, the plan may not cover you in case you already had abdominal cancer when you purchased it. Otherwise, after usual waiting times (usually 30 to 90 days), cancer claims are valid.

Abdominal Cancer Treatment Access and Pre-authorisation

Pre-authorisation is required for cashless cancer treatment. You also need to get the consent of your insurer/Third Party Administrator (TPA) before major treatments (surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy) or ICU treatments. This guarantees cashless cover in network hospitals.

Like any hospitalisation claim, adhere to typical pre-admission and treatment-authorisation protocols. Notify the insurer within 24 hours in case of an emergency.

Health insurance covers abdominal cancers, with the usual policy terms. The expenses of the treatment (surgery, chemotherapy, radiology, supportive care) are reimbursed. Critical-illness or cancer riders may also provide you with lump-sum benefits upon a diagnosis, but they are not required since your mediclaim will cover hospitalisation costs.

Always verify policy terms and wait times, and keep in mind that any preexisting cancer at the point of purchase can be omitted. Insurance can help deal with the high costs of abdominal cancer, which can be significantly financed when properly managed.
